Almond Streusel Apple Pie

Apple pie filling made from sugar, flour, salt, almond extract and thinly sliced baking apples. Spooned into a pie shell crust and topped with a brown sugar, flour and butter streusel, and toasted almond slivers.
Ingredients -
1 Unbaked Pie Shell Crust

Filling:
1/2 cup Sugar
2 tablespoons All-Purpose Flour
1/8 teaspoon Salt
1/4 teaspoon Almond Extract
7 cups thinly sliced peeled Apples

Streusel:
1/2 cup All-Purpose Flour
1/2 cup packed Brown Sugar
1/4 cup Butter or Margarine, cut into pieces
1/2 cup sliced Almonds

 
Preparation:

1. Preheat oven to 425 F.

2. Bake pie shell crust 5 minutes.

3. Add filling ingredients to large mixing bowl. Mix well.

4. Fold apples into filling mixture to coat.

5. Spoon filling into pastry shell.

6. Add streusel ingredients to small mixing bowl except almonds. Mix with fork until crumbly.

7. Sprinkle streusel mixture over apples.

8. Bake apple pie 20 minutes. Cover pie with foil and bake 25 minutes.

9. Sprinkle pie with almonds.

10. Bake uncovered 3-5 minutes to toast almonds.

11. Cool before serving.

Apple Choice
Granny Smith apples would be a good choice for this pie if available. Ask your produce manager or farmers market which local and regional varieties are best for baking.
